Hairstylist Adrienne Leak shares how she created runway-ready structured ponytails for the EMERGE Fashion Show at New York Fashion Week and is sharing a tutorial to create the look.

One of our favorite parts of New York Fashion Week is taking in all the show-stopping clothes and, of course, hair! Shows like these help indicate where trends will be heading, so you can stay on top of what's next in the industry.
This year, we're seeing a big emphasis on styling. From braids, ponytails, buns, bows and more, hairstylists are finding fun and creative ways to give their clients' hair a little extra embellishment. Here, hairstylist Adrienne Leak (@aleakhairstudio) shares how she created runway-ready structured ponytails for the EMERGE Fashion Show at New York Fashion Week using products from presenting sponsor and natural haircare brand Thank God It’s Natural (tgin).
Step 1: Prep
- Start with clean, damp hair. Use tgin’s Green Tea Super Moist Leave In Conditioner to seal in hydration.
- Evenly distribute through hair, detangling as needed.
Step 2: Protect & Style
- Before heat styling, apply tgin’s Miracle Styling 3-N-1 Heat Protectant Spray to shield hair from heat up to 450° F.
- Blow-dry until hair and scalp are completely dry.
- Working in sections, run a flat iron through the hair until you’ve achieved a super sleek finish.
Step 3: Form the Ponytail
- Using a fine-tooth comb, divide hair into sections and begin smoothing back into a ponytail.
- Use a detangling brush to ensure the hair is tightly gathered without bumps.
- Secure the ponytail with an elastic band.
- Combine hair with natural hair extensions, if using, into a braid.
- Braid hair to the desired length, using an elastic band to secure the end.
- Tie off the braid a few inches above the ends of the hair. Tease the remaining hair to create the puff at the bottom of the ponytail.
- Weave in accessories as desired to dress hair up.
Step 4: Tame Flyaways
- Lightly apply tgin’s Miracle Styling Smooth & Sleek Wax Stick for additional sleekness and to help smooth flyaways.
- Smooth down with a boar bristle brush to blend the product into the hair.
Step 5: Lay Those Edges
- Apply tgin’s Smooth & Hold Edge Control and swirl edges to your desired look.
- Smooth gel over the full ponytail style for additional hold and shine.
